Energy, trade, the Black Sea, the Caucasus, Syria, relations with NATO, and the war in Ukraine constantly compel Moscow and Ankara to seek common ground. On some issues, their interests coincide; on others, they diverge considerably. Yet even serious disagreements do not bring dialogue to a halt.

RusTurkey.com brought together the views of four Turkish experts, each approaching Russian-Turkish relations from a different perspective.

Güngör Yavuzaslan: Turkey No Longer Wants to Choose One Side

Journalist and foreign policy commentator Güngör Yavuzaslan links the changes in relations between Russia and Turkey primarily to Ankara’s evolving foreign policy course.

In his view, today’s Turkey is moving increasingly away from the Cold War logic, when its international position was largely defined by its membership in the Western bloc.

This does not mean abandoning relations with the West. Ankara seeks to determine independently with whom, and in which areas, it is beneficial to cooperate.

Relations with Russia have become one of the clearest examples of this approach.

Yavuzaslan describes this model as “competitive cooperation.” Moscow and Ankara may have conflicting interests in one region while simultaneously developing major joint projects in another. Disagreements do not necessarily mean a breakdown in relations, just as cooperation does not require complete alignment of political positions.

According to Yavuzaslan, this model is based on Turkey’s pursuit of strategic autonomy and its ability to determine its own foreign policy priorities independently.

Serkan Gündoğdu: No Longer an Alliance, but Interdependence

Associate Professor at Munzur University Serkan Gündoğdu offers another definition of the current relationship between Moscow and Ankara: “strategic interdependence.”

This is particularly evident in the energy sector.

Russian gas supplies, the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, energy infrastructure, and long-standing economic ties have created a system of relations between the two countries that has long gone beyond an ordinary trade partnership.

At the same time, the expert stresses that interdependence should not turn into one-sided dependence.

Turkey is interested in continuing large-scale cooperation with Russia, while simultaneously diversifying its energy sources and developing relations with other partners.

A similar principle applies to foreign policy. Ankara remains a member of NATO, maintains close relations with Western countries, and at the same time preserves its own channel of engagement with Moscow.

For this reason, the familiar question of “Russia or the West?” increasingly fails to reflect the reality of Turkish foreign policy. Ankara seeks not to choose a single geopolitical axis, but to preserve its ability to engage simultaneously with several centers of power.

Mehmet Gökhan Özçubukçu: Russia as Part of Turkey’s Balancing Strategy

International relations expert Mehmet Gökhan Özçubukçu also believes that Russian-Turkish relations cannot be viewed as a traditional alliance.

For Turkey, Russia is not only a major neighbor and an important trade and economic partner. Moscow also occupies a significant place within Ankara’s broader foreign policy balancing strategy.

Energy, trade, and regional security issues connect the two countries, while cooperation with Russia also expands Turkey’s ability to pursue an independent policy among different centers of power.

Özçubukçu defines relations between Moscow and Ankara as “cooperation amid competition.”

This model allows the two countries to continue working together even when their positions on individual international issues do not coincide.

For Ankara, relations with Moscow are not an alternative to relations with the West. Instead, they represent another dimension of foreign policy that allows Turkey to expand its room for diplomatic and economic maneuver.

Cihan Günel: The Black Sea Requires a Distinct Balance

International relations expert Cihan Günel views Russian-Turkish relations primarily through the lens of security and the situation in the Black Sea.

Turkey is a member of NATO, but at the same time remains one of the key Black Sea powers. For this reason, the expert argues, its relations with Russia cannot be assessed solely through the prism of its obligations within the North Atlantic Alliance.

Ankara has its own interests in the region, directly linked to its national security.

In this context, the Montreux Convention, which regulates the passage of warships through the Turkish Straits, retains particular importance. For Turkey, stability in the Black Sea is not an abstract diplomatic issue, but an important element of its own security.

According to Günel, Ankara will continue its policy of balancing between NATO and Russia while maintaining an independent position on issues directly affecting the Black Sea.

A New Formula for Relations

The different assessments offered by the Turkish experts converge on one point: Russian-Turkish relations increasingly depend less on complete political alignment between Moscow and Ankara.

The two countries have learned to separate areas where cooperation is possible from issues on which their positions remain different. As a result, political disagreements do not halt economic projects, energy cooperation, or dialogue on regional security.

For Turkey, this model makes it possible to maintain independence in foreign policy, develop relations with Russia, and at the same time continue engagement with Western partners. For Russia, it provides a way to maintain stable relations with one of the region’s key states even amid major shifts in the international environment.

This pragmatic balance of interests is gradually becoming the new formula for relations between Moscow and Ankara. For both countries, its advantage lies in the ability to cooperate where it is mutually beneficial without demanding complete agreement from one another, while preserving dialogue on issues where finding common ground is more difficult.

Güngör Yavuzaslan: Turkey and Russia Are Building a Model of “Competitive Cooperation” https://rusturkey.com/gungoer-yavuzaslan-turkey-and-russia-are-building-a-model-of-competitive-cooperation https://rusturkey.com/gungoer-yavuzaslan-turkey-and-russia-are-building-a-model-of-competitive-cooperation Turkish journalist and foreign policy commentator Güngör Yavuzaslan on Ankara’s strategic autonomy, its model of “competitive cooperation” with Moscow, and Turkey’s growing geopolitical weight in an increasingly multipolar world

Exclusive interview for RusTurkey.com

RT: Today, Turkey is developing its relations with both the West and Russia primarily on the basis of its own national interests and is pursuing an increasingly independent foreign policy. How is Ankara’s strategic autonomy changing the nature of Turkish-Russian relations?

Güngör Yavuzaslan: Turkey’s complete departure from the reflexes of the Cold War era, when it was seen as the “forward outpost of the West” or a “flank country,” represents a revolutionary shift in Ankara’s foreign policy.

The “strategic autonomy” pursued by Ankara has moved Turkish-Russian relations away from an asymmetric framework and placed them on the basis of interaction between “equal actors” guided by mutual and rational interests.

By abandoning the role of a blind executor of Western policies aimed at containing Russia, Turkey has placed its own national interests at the centre of its foreign policy, including energy security, counterterrorism, and regional stability.

This independent position has enabled Moscow to view Ankara not merely as a NATO member, but as “a reliable partner and an independent centre of power capable of making its own decisions.”

As a result, the relationship has evolved into a realistic model of “geopolitical equilibrium”: pragmatic, removed from ideological constraints, based on leader-level diplomacy, and capable of managing mutual interdependence.

RT: Turkey and Russia interact simultaneously in the Black Sea region, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and the Middle East, although their interests do not always coincide. Can we say that a distinctive model of relations has emerged in which two regional powers are capable of managing their disagreements without undermining political dialogue?

Güngör Yavuzaslan: Absolutely. In international relations literature, this new model has been described as “competitive cooperation” and “regional compartmentalization.”

Turkey and Russia demonstrate a mature approach to statecraft by preventing disagreements in one region from poisoning cooperation in another.

For example, in Syria, particularly regarding Idlib and the Syrian National Army (SNA), we find ourselves on opposing sides, yet we are still able to maintain the Astana process at the negotiating table.

In the Caucasus, during the Karabakh war, Turkey supported Azerbaijan on the battlefield with its full strength, and immediately afterwards managed to establish a Joint Monitoring Centre with Russia.

The same pattern applies to the Black Sea region and the Ukrainian crisis, including the grain corridor and strict adherence to the Montreux Convention.

This unique model is one of the world’s most successful examples of a strategy based not on freezing crises, but on managing them while keeping diplomatic channels open at all costs.

RT: As a multipolar world order takes shape, Turkey’s geopolitical weight as an independent centre of power continues to grow. In your view, how will Turkey’s growing geopolitical influence affect its relations with Russia in the coming years?

Güngör Yavuzaslan: At this historic turning point, as we approach the end of unipolar American hegemony, or imperialism, and the “law of the jungle” it has imposed, as our Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has repeatedly described it, Turkey is becoming one of the key “central countries” of the emerging world.

Turkey’s growing geopolitical weight will continue to deepen its relations with Russia in the coming years. However, this deepening will take place in an environment in which Ankara’s “red lines” are defined much more clearly.

The potential for cooperation in areas such as energy, including the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant and gas hubs, logistics corridors, including the Zangezur Corridor and the Middle Corridor, and the defence industry will continue to grow. At the same time, through the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), Turkey will become a more active player in shaping developments in Central Asia and the Caucasus.

Meanwhile, taking into account the new regional alliances, particularly the “Mecca Alliance,” formed in the spirit of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s principle that “the world is bigger than five,” Russia will encounter at the regional level not a Turkey that takes instructions from the West, but a strong Turkey that shapes the order in its own geopolitical neighbourhood.

This will be particularly evident in Syria, where Turkey seeks to protect the rights of Turkmens in the region, eliminate what it describes as a terrorist corridor, and pursue an uncompromising security policy in response to Israel’s expansionist policies.

This will inevitably make bilateral relations far more respectful, uncompromising, and consequential for the global balance of power.

Cihan Günyel: “Turkey Will Maintain Its Policy of Balancing Between NATO and Russia” https://rusturkey.com/cihan-gunyel-turkey-will-maintain-its-policy-of-balancing-between-nato-and-russia https://rusturkey.com/cihan-gunyel-turkey-will-maintain-its-policy-of-balancing-between-nato-and-russia Turkish international relations expert Cihan Günyel on Black Sea security, the role of the Montreux Convention, Ankara’s relations with Moscow, and the prospects for a diplomatic settlement of the Russia-Ukraine conflict

“Turkey Will Remain a Key Player in Efforts to Resolve the Conflict”

RT: As NATO strengthens its security posture in the Black Sea, Turkey, on the one hand, continues to fulfill its obligations to the Alliance while, on the other, seeking to avoid direct confrontation with Russia. Do you believe Ankara will be able to maintain this delicate balance between NATO and Russia in the coming years? Is Turkey gaining more room to act as an independent regional player, or is that room gradually narrowing?

Cihan Günyel: Turkey is an important member of NATO. The North Atlantic Alliance was established in 1949, and Turkey joined it in 1952.

Until the 1960s, relations between the Soviet Union and Turkey remained tense under the influence of the Cold War. However, in 1964, disagreements with the United States over the Cyprus issue prompted Ankara to seek a new balance in its foreign policy. This marked the beginning of a period of rapprochement with the Soviet Union.

In 1967, the two countries signed an Agreement on Technical and Economic Cooperation. With Soviet loans and technical assistance, major industrial projects were implemented, including the Iskenderun Iron and Steel Works, the aluminum plant in Seydişehir, and the oil refinery in Aliağa.

In 1972, the two countries signed a Declaration on the Principles of Good-Neighbourly Relations. Political dialogue intensified, yet Turkey neither abandoned its NATO membership nor its pro-Western orientation.

In this way, Ankara succeeded in establishing a balance between the Soviet Union and the West.

In essence, this policy continued after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Turkey’s relations with the Russian Federation have likewise developed on the basis of maintaining a balance.

Regional tensions and conflicts directly affect the interests of both countries. It is clear that armed confrontations and security threats in the Black Sea have an immediate impact on the stability of Turkey, Russia, and the other coastal states.

At the same time, the strategic importance of the Black Sea is not limited to security issues. It also plays a vital role in the trade and economies of the coastal countries.

Regardless of their membership in any military or political alliances, conflicts and tensions in the Black Sea become a common concern for all states in the region. The current situation therefore requires Turkey, Russia, and the other Black Sea states to act jointly and responsibly.

The Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Straits has long played an important role in preserving the existing order in the Black Sea.

Turkey views developments not only from the perspective of a NATO member, but first and foremost as a Black Sea state that takes into account its own interests as well as the security of the other coastal countries.

Ankara has no interest in changing the established regional order or in allowing new threats to emerge that could turn the Black Sea into an arena of even sharper confrontation and jeopardize regional stability and the security of neighbouring states.

I therefore believe that, in the coming period, Turkey will continue to pursue a policy of balance, maintaining an independent foreign policy while participating in diplomatic efforts aimed at bringing the Russia-Ukraine conflict to an end.

In my view, Turkey’s room for manoeuvre is not so much narrowing as acquiring new significance. The country will retain its role as one of the key players in efforts to resolve the conflict.

“The Montreux Convention Ensures the Security of Not Only Turkey, but Russia as Well”

RT: Attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea have become more frequent recently. Vessels linked to Turkey have also been exposed to these risks, making the issue of regional security more immediate for Ankara. Could these developments lead to changes in Turkey’s policy toward Russia, NATO, and Black Sea security more broadly? What role will the Montreux Convention play in ensuring Turkey’s security and preserving the regional balance in the future?

Cihan Günyel: Through the Montreux Convention, Turkey secured its own position in the Black Sea while also contributing to the establishment of a regional order that has existed since 1936.

The Convention limits the ability of NATO and other external actors that are not Black Sea states to expand their military presence in the region and create security threats for the coastal countries.

In particular, the Convention establishes the following restrictions:

  • The total tonnage of foreign warships passing through the Straits at any one time may not exceed 15,000 tons, while the number of such vessels may not exceed nine.

  • The aggregate tonnage of warships belonging to non-Black Sea states present in the Black Sea is limited to 45,000 tons.

  • No single non-Black Sea state may account for more than 30,000 tons.

  • Warships belonging to non-Black Sea states may remain in the Black Sea for no longer than 21 days.

  • The passage of aircraft carriers and submarines is restricted, except in cases provided for under the Convention concerning submarines belonging to Black Sea states.

Looking at these provisions, it becomes clear that their primary purpose is to prevent external actors from establishing a dominant military presence in the Black Sea and creating additional security threats for other states.

The Montreux Convention is often misunderstood as primarily restricting Russia in the Black Sea. In my view, the opposite is true.

The restrictions on tonnage and the duration of stay of warships belonging to non-Black Sea states constrain the ability of other actors to expand their influence in the region.

The Black Sea and the Turkish Straits provide Russia with access to the world’s oceans. The Black Sea itself can be regarded as a semi-enclosed sea.

The historical experience of the Crimean War of 1853–1856 had a significant impact on Russia’s perception of regional security.

The participation of the major European powers of the time, Britain and France, in the Crimean War, as well as the operations of their naval forces in the Black Sea, contributed to shaping Russia’s historical memory regarding security in the region.

For this reason, the Montreux Convention is of great importance not only to Turkey, but also to Russia and the other Black Sea states.

This is precisely why Ankara seeks to prevent the established order from being undermined.

Turkey maintained this position even during the Second World War and the Cold War. Its approach remains equally consistent today.

In addition to preserving the existing regional order, Ankara has no intention of abandoning its role in efforts to achieve a diplomatic settlement of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine or its objective of maintaining balanced relations with both countries.

I believe Turkey will not permit actions by external actors that could adversely affect its security, alter the established regional order, or jeopardize the safety of navigation in the Black Sea.

Recent developments demonstrate how important it is for Turkey and the other coastal states, which have a deep understanding of the region’s historical characteristics, to play a more active role in resolving existing problems.

“A New Security Architecture Should Not Undermine the Existing Order in the Black Sea”

RT: Despite being a NATO member, Turkey remains one of the few countries in the Alliance capable of maintaining political and economic dialogue with Russia. At the same time, Ankara has proposed reviving a diplomatic mechanism that would ensure the safety of navigation and grain shipments in the Black Sea. Could Turkey’s ability to maintain direct communication between Moscow and the West strengthen its strategic role not only as a mediator, but also in shaping a new European and Black Sea security architecture?

Cihan Günyel: As I have already noted, the rights granted to Turkey under the Montreux Convention provide security not only for Turkey itself, but also for the other Black Sea states.

In my view, an attempt to establish a new security architecture in the Black Sea involving external actors that have no coastline on the sea would amount to dismantling the regional order that has developed over many decades.

This, in turn, could create new security threats, increase the risk of conflict, and lead to the emergence of an unstable regional system.

I do not believe that all Black Sea states would want to see the order established under the Montreux Convention changed. Russia, in particular, would not want such a change.

Furthermore, Turkey and Russia, as two neighbouring states, maintain balanced relations.

Their cooperation spans numerous areas, ranging from trade and energy to security and the construction of a nuclear power plant.

In the Middle East and North Africa, the positions of the two countries sometimes diverge, and they may support opposing sides. However, in regions close to their own borders and of mutual interest, Ankara and Moscow seek to act on the basis of mutual understanding, respect for each other’s security interests, and mutual trust.

I believe that Turkey and Russia may have different approaches to the architecture of European security, just as their foreign policy positions may differ in other regions.

However, because of its geographical location, strategic importance, and historical experience in the field of security, the Black Sea represents a distinct area of strategic importance for both countries.

For this reason, in my view, neither Turkey nor Russia will allow external actors or defence alliances to undermine the existing order in the Black Sea.

Moscow in the Shadow of the Middle East Conflict: New Perspectives https://rusturkey.com/moscow-in-the-shadow-of-the-middle-east-conflict-new-perspectives https://rusturkey.com/moscow-in-the-shadow-of-the-middle-east-conflict-new-perspectives RT: How do you assess Russia's strategic role amid the rapidly escalating tensions between Iran, the US, and Israel in the Middle East? What is Moscow really trying to achieve or preserve in this crisis?

— The military operation (or more accurately, war) launched by the US and Israel against Iran has undoubtedly become one of the pivotal factors in the new stage of geopolitical transformation in the Middle East. This event has already set in motion processes affecting not only regional, but also global players from different sides. It is important to note that, in Russia’s case, it would be a mistake to limit its role to the Syrian context alone. Today, despite its allied relationship with Iran, Russia is actively developing cooperation with leading international institutions, such as the SCO and BRICS, together with the Gulf States, with which it maintains well-developed bilateral relations. Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan, and other countries outside the Gulf are also involved in these structures as full or observer members.

Another important aspect is the close historical and human ties between Russia and Israel: Russian is widely spoken among Israelis, and a significant portion of Israel’s population consists of immigrants from Russia and the former USSR. There are even military relations between these countries; for instance, Israel does not supply weapons to Ukraine and makes it a condition that weapons exported to Eastern European countries are not used against Russia. This demonstrates that although Russia is not always at the forefront, it holds a highly influential position in the region.

The escalation of military conflict between Iran and Israel, with the involvement of other regional players, could threaten the role of the SCO and BRICS as new alternatives to the international system challenging US and Western hegemony. If long-term security threats become entrenched among regional states, this would open the way for the US to become the chief architect of a new “security architecture” and strengthen Western influence in the Middle East. In such a case, the SCO and BRICS, where Russia and China are key players, may lose their strength and value as alternatives to Western institutions and as a potential foundation for a new world order.

Moreover, the military and technical support of Ukraine by the Gulf states and Israel, and the further development of their military cooperation, could spill over into the Ukraine conflict, increasing pressure on Russia and influencing diplomatic processes. Israel’s lobbying power in the US and the financial capabilities of Dubai could become significant factors in the confrontation between Russia and Ukraine. As a global player, Russia will strive to curb the “militarization” of the American position regarding Ukraine, to prevent a new wave of military support—especially in the context of the peace negotiations that have begun. A regime change in Iran and the advent of pro-Western forces would mark a new phase of US influence in the Middle East, and a strategic US alliance with Tehran could become a challenge for Russia not only in the Caucasus region (via the Zangezur corridor), but in its entire historical sphere of influence.

NATO in Europe, the US, and their allies in the Caucasus region—all this could turn Eurasia into an arena of new competition between Russia and the West. Strategic communications, supply corridors, transport, and energy flows in the region may also come under the threat of disruption for both Russia and China. Thus, the West gains new avenues for pressure on both sides, and the unfolding of the situation increasingly resembles a grand chess game, as described by Zbigniew Brzezinski. Russia will strive to consider interests in three geopolitical spaces at once—the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and the Caucasus—developing an integrated strategy across all these fronts.

RT: How do you assess the recent escalation between the US and Iran? How do such crises impact international equilibrium?

— Overall, the war between the US, Israel, and Iran reflects the shift of the international system from a law-based structure to an order built on brute force. The policy of “peace through strength,” pursued during Donald Trump’s second term, is a direct confirmation of this trend. The US and the West, as they lose their status as chief global managers, are making the roles of regional players ever more apparent, while Russia and China are emerging as independent, decisive actors on a global scale.

For Israel, an attack on Iran is a matter of existential threat, whereas for the US, a strike against Iran is seen as an attempt to change, or at least weaken, the Iranian regime and break its strategic alliance with China and Russia—much like Washington’s actions in Venezuela. Should a US-leaning leadership come to power in Tehran, this would spell trouble for China not only in the sphere of energy resources, but also in terms of blocking the integration routes of the “Belt and Road” initiative. The West’s zones of influence in the Caucasus and Central Asia would expand, and Western companies would gain access to the region’s resources. As a result, the influence of Russia and China in Eurasia would be undermined. The positioning of the Zangezur corridor as the "Trump corridor" further integrates the South Caucasus and Caspian region into the US sphere of interest.

RT: In such crises, does Russia primarily act as a balancing power, or is it mainly defending its own strategic interests?

— Russia has been engaged in a military conflict with Ukraine for over four years, remaining under harsh sanctions from the West and the US. During this period, even in its traditional spheres of influence, such as Syria, Russia has encountered changes—the new regime in Damascus is now leaning more towards the West. If regime change or “adaptation” towards the US takes place in Iran as well, Russia’s sphere of influence will be under threat—not just in the Middle East, but also in Central Asia and the Caucasus. Furthermore, a hit to the Russia–China–Iran axis would undermine the idea of building an alternative, non-centric international system, leading to a decline in the prestige of the SCO and BRICS as alternatives to Western institutions for resolving conflicts. This would call into question their capacity to serve as genuine alternatives. In such a situation, Russia and China will most likely pursue a strategy aimed at preventing regime change in Iran.

If, as with Venezuela, the Iranian regime becomes pro-Western, the whole network of Russia’s and China’s allies will be destabilized, raising questions about the reliability of any cooperation with them, and even about the status of these powers as major players with mechanisms for resolving global crises.

RT: Do you think the US-Iran standoff contributes to strengthening or, on the contrary, complicating Russia’s international position?

— The answer to that question will become clearer in the coming weeks. If Russia presents itself as an arbiter in the matter of Iran’s sovereignty, acts as a guarantor in peace talks, and plays a leading role in resolving the Iranian nuclear issue, its position in the world will be noticeably strengthened. In the short term, Moscow has already benefited from a partial lifting of US sanctions on Russian energy exports amid the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz. Russian energy resources are, once again, coming to the fore in conditions of a global energy crisis.

RT: How do such crises affect the relationships within NATO and the sense of alliance unity?

— Donald Trump’s second term has also acted as a catalyst for divisions within NATO. He effectively reduced the significance of the European security architecture, demanded that alliance partners take on greater responsibility, challenged defense budget sizes, negotiated with Russia without European participation during the Ukrainian peace process, and took steps towards normalizing relations with Moscow. All this has probably led to the greatest rift in NATO history. Specifically regarding the Iran/Israel conflict, the US, contrary to established tradition, excluded Britain and France from operations and proposed that NATO intervene in the Strait of Hormuz—yet another move deepening divisions. Many allies did not support the initiative, considering it lacked legitimacy, and Trump in response labelled NATO a “paper tiger,” even publicly suggesting the US drop out of the alliance. Spain’s recent refusal to provide military bases for operations against Iran, and Trump’s remarks about expelling Spain from NATO, confirm the scale of the conflict between the US and European allies. I believe Trump’s second term will usher in a period of new crises for the West.

RT: Does the caution of European countries in such situations create advantages for Russia?

— The caution of Europe and of Russia has different origins. Europe, feeling threatened by Russia, has shifted focus to a security architecture of its own, taking into account the aftermath of the “Arab Spring” (migrant flows and terrorist attacks), while the potential fall of the Iranian regime raises fears of a repeat of those scenarios. The EU, already facing problems because of the oil embargo against Russia and trying to find alternative energy sources, will find itself in even greater difficulty if the Strait of Hormuz is blocked. The rise in oil prices, which benefits Russia, will help it strengthen its economy and fund military operations in Ukraine—potentially spelling another round of economic hardship for Europe. The energy factor is a serious lever for Moscow, not only with respect to the Strait of Hormuz, but also in other aspects of its broader strategy.

RT: In your view, how will such conflicts and crises shape Russia’s long-term foreign policy?

— In the long term, Russia will likely strive to resolve the Ukrainian issue to its own advantage, to preserve its historic spheres of influence in its near abroad, to build up a system of alliances in opposition to the Western international system, and to retain the deterrent potential of its military power—especially given rapid changes taking place in the doctrines of asymmetric warfare. Military power, as well as traditional geographic and climatic advantages, have always served Russia as an additional strategic asset. Thus, Russia will continue a strategy based on composure, patience, foresight, and flexible diplomacy.

Russia and Turkey: Allies or Competitors? https://rusturkey.com/russia-and-turkey-allies-or-competitors https://rusturkey.com/russia-and-turkey-allies-or-competitors RT: What is the specific strategic role of Russia in its relations with Turkey?

— The relationship between Russia and Turkey is a prime example of "cooperation amid competition." Instead of classical alliances, we are witnessing a pragmatic, multilayered dialogue where issues of security, energy, and economics play a central role. For Ankara, Moscow is not only an energy supplier but also a strategic partner, and a factor that allows Turkey to balance between East and West.

RT: What are the key areas of cooperation defining Russian-Turkish relations today?

— The spheres of Russian-Turkish interaction go far beyond energy and defense. In addition to large-scale projects such as the TurkStream pipeline and the Akkuyu nuclear power plant, economic integration, joint management of regional crises, the development of trade and tourism are all important. These areas together create a deeply rooted strategic partnership.

RT: How has the war in Ukraine affected Turkey's foreign policy?

— The conflict has turned Turkey into a balancing power able to influence global processes. Ankara has maintained ties with both Russia and Ukraine, has acted as a key mediator in the grain deal, and has leveraged its geostrategic position on issues of security and diplomacy. The war's economic consequences are also strongly felt here.

RT: Can Turkey continue to balance between Russia and the West as the conflict drags on?

— Maintaining this balance is becoming more difficult every year. The protracted war increases external pressures and demands diplomatic flexibility. Turkey is dependent on Russia in the field of energy, but it is also integrally linked to the West through NATO and the economy. Balance is possible only with continuous policy adaptation and crisis management capability.

RT: What are Russia's goals in the war against Ukraine?

— Moscow seeks not only military results but also aims to prevent Ukraine’s rapprochement with NATO, to counter Western “containment” policies, and to reinforce its own geopolitical standing. The war has become a way of shaping a new balance of power, while domestically it works towards the consolidation of society.

RT: What role does Russia play in the confrontation between the US and Iran?

— Russia adopts a multi-vector approach: it collaborates with Iran, maintains a dialogue with the US and Israel. Moscow’s main objective is to restrain American influence in the Middle East, while it is also not interested in an excessively empowered Tehran. Balancing these interests can yield economic benefits for Russia amidst regional crises.

RT: In the US-Iran conflict, is Russia a mediator or an ally?

— Russia formally maintains a balance, but in practice is closer to Iran as an opponent to US hegemony. However, its policy is pragmatic: when necessary, Moscow adjusts its support to further its relations with other players, including Israel. This flexible approach broadens Russia’s opportunities in the Middle East.

RT: What effect does increased Russian influence in the Middle East have on relations with Turkey?

— It intensifies both elements of competition and cooperation. On issues like Syria and Libya, the two countries often take opposing positions, yet they avoid open confrontation. This forces Turkey to simultaneously negotiate with Russia and strengthen its own autonomous policy in the region.

RT: How significant is the energy factor for Russia and Turkey?

— Energy is one of the pillars of bilateral relations. Russia remains a key supplier of energy resources, while Turkey is an important transit country and a potential energy hub for Moscow. At the same time, this energy dependency drives Ankara to pursue supply diversification.

RT: What are the main opportunities and risks for the future development of Russian-Turkish relations?

— The main avenues for cooperation lie in energy, logistics, and the expansion of regional influence. Risks are related to competition in Central Asia, crisis zones (such as Syria, Ukraine, the Caucasus), the issue of sanctions, and the challenge of balancing the interests of both countries amid a changing world order.

Yunus Göksu: "Documentary Cinema is an Element of Cultural Sovereignty and Strategic Influence" https://rusturkey.com/yunus-goeksu-documentary-cinema-is-an-element-of-cultural-sovereignty-and-strategic-influence https://rusturkey.com/yunus-goeksu-documentary-cinema-is-an-element-of-cultural-sovereignty-and-strategic-influence RT:
Do you view documentary filmmaking solely as an artistic endeavor, or do you also assess it in the context of cultural sovereignty and geopolitics? What is the significance of this field for countries with strong historical memory, such as Turkey and Russia?

Yunus Göksu:
For me, documentary filmmaking is much more than an aesthetic form. This field is one of the key elements of cultural sovereignty. If a society does not create its own historical narrative, it becomes dependent on the interpretations of other actors. This has not only cultural but also strategic repercussions.

The Russian philosopher Nikolai Berdyaev noted that historical consciousness determines the spiritual continuity of a nation. Similarly, in Turkey, historical memory is central to the formation of identity. Therefore, documentary cinema is not only about recounting the past, but also about positioning the present and future through an interpretation of history.

In editing, my primary focus is the dramaturgical framework. Merely sequencing archival material is insufficient. The narrative must possess intellectual tension and human conflict. In this respect, I am influenced by the works of Andrei Tarkovsky. Tarkovsky did not view memory as nostalgic, but as a metaphysical space. I also strive to construct memory in documentary film as a living field of consciousness.

RT:
How do you find a balance between psychological depth and ideological context in your scriptwriting?

Yunus Göksu:
Human psychology precedes ideology. The drive for power, fear, loyalty, betrayal—these are universal themes. The works of Fyodor Dostoevsky place human conscience at the center, regardless of political context. This approach is very important to me.

I do not ignore the geopolitical background, but I do not turn the character into a propaganda tool. Propaganda yields a short-term effect; a well-constructed character is enduring.

As seen in the historical narratives of Tolstoy, major events acquire meaning only within the inner world of the individual. In scripting, it is crucial to build this inner tension. If the motivation of the character is authentic, international audiences can also identify with them.

RT:
Why do you continue to develop such a classical form as radio theater in the era of digital media?

Yunus Göksu:
Radio theater removes visual distractions and compels the listener to participate mentally.

There is a strong tradition of radio theater in Russia. This tradition demonstrates the place of oral storytelling in cultural memory. In an era dominated by visual media, sound becomes a concentrated narrative instrument.

Silence, intonation, and rhythm become dramaturgical tools. Therefore, I regard radio theater not as nostalgia for the past, but as a modern form of intellectual discipline.

RT:
How do you assess the export of media content between Turkey and Russia? What does it mean in terms of cultural diplomacy?

Yunus Göksu:
The export of media content today goes beyond mere economic activity. It is an important element of “soft power” strategy.

Turkey has made significant advances in the export of dramatic productions in recent years. Russia, in turn, holds global authority thanks to the depth of its literature and cinema. Sergei Eisenstein’s editing theory played a defining role in world cinema history. This intellectual heritage demonstrates the strength of the Russian narrative tradition.

Mutual exchange of content shapes perceptions beyond political news. People first learn about a country through its stories. Therefore, media content export holds real diplomatic potential.

RT:
Is a cultural filter necessary when importing media content?

Yunus Göksu:
A cultural filter does not mean censorship; it means conscious selectivity.

Russian cinema is particularly strong in character depth and psychological analysis. The films of Andrey Zvyagintsev vividly reveal the moral solitude of individuals. Turkey can learn from this aesthetic approach.

At the same time, Turkish dramatic productions offer a different narrative pace and emotional intensity. Conscious mutual import ensures cultural enrichment.

RT:
What is your perspective on future joint Turkish-Russian projects?

Yunus Göksu:
Joint projects are the most concrete manifestation of cultural strategy. The Black Sea region, historical contacts, and migration stories create a shared narrative foundation.

Combining the psychological depth of Russian cinema with the dramatic dynamism of Turkish storytelling can generate a powerful hybrid aesthetic. This would be an achievement not only in the arts but also in diplomacy.

RT:
How is the rise of digital platforms affecting media and geopolitics?

Yunus Göksu:
Digital platforms have weakened national borders. Content now circulates globally with ease. However, this has heightened competition.

Content that does not preserve cultural identity is lost on the global market. Content that retains local value and employs a universal narrative language becomes sustainable.

In this context, originality has become a strategic imperative.

RT:
How can music program production contribute to cultural diplomacy?

Yunus Göksu:
Music has the ability to overcome ideological barriers. There are rhythmic and emotional similarities between Russian and Turkish folk music.

Joint musical projects can foster emotional closeness between societies. Over the long term, this intimacy strengthens cultural understanding.

RT:
What advice would you give to young content creators?

Yunus Göksu:
Global production is impossible without studying your own cultural roots. One cannot understand the Russian soul without reading Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and studying Tarkovsky. Likewise, without knowing Turkish oral tradition, it is impossible to create a universal Turkish narrative.

Without depth, global relevance is impossible.

RT:
What is your ultimate goal?

Yunus Göksu:
The goal is not popularity, but sustainable impact. I aim to create projects that contribute to cultural memory.

I focus on projects with a high intellectual level and strong dramaturgy, capable of building cultural bridges between Turkey and Russia. Because culture precedes politics. When history is constructed properly, borders become secondary.

About:
Yunus Göksu is a media producer specializing in documentary editing, screenwriting, radio theater, and the production of music programs. He views narrative not just as a technical process but as an intellectual and cultural construction.

His disciplined approach to dramaturgy, character development, and narrative architecture sets him apart from the average content producer. Göksu designs his projects not as temporary media products, but as cultural structures oriented towards long-term impact.

His production philosophy is based on a systemic working model that combines aesthetic sensitivity with strategic vision.

How did the series “Kaderimin Oyunu” start in the ratings? https://rusturkey.com/how-did-the-series-kaderimin-oyunu-start-in-the-ratings https://rusturkey.com/how-did-the-series-kaderimin-oyunu-start-in-the-ratings Although the rates were below the average in general, it is seen from the ratings that there is an audience interest in all categories. If the series of Kaderimin Oyunu had been on another channel, maybe it would have reached a much larger audience. However, the low viewing rate of Star TV seems to be an obstacle to a better opening of the series.

Starring Akın Akınözü, Öykü Karayel and Sarp Apak, the series ranked 11th among all people, while it finished 9th in AB group and 10th in ABC1.

Although it doesn’t look very good in terms of ranking, it is hopeful that the series received ratings very close to the average rates.

For those who are well aware of Star TV’s bad luck with the series this season, Kaderimin Oyunu seemed to be a series that could rise and hold in the coming weeks.

The rates of the second episode of the series, which will be broadcast on Friday, December 10, will give a clearer idea.

The series became the first with good rates in all rating categories.

Previously, the Sadakatsiz series was able to beat its opponent in the AB group. Due to the recent decline in Sadakatsiz, Kuruluş Osman was quite comfortable at the summit. However, Kanal D series became a candidate for the first place again with its performance in the second season.

The 41st episode of the TV series Sadakatsiz, which aired on Wednesday, December 1, was very impressive. The ratings of the series, starring Cansu Dere, Caner Cindoruk, Melis Sezen and Berkay Ateş, have also increased considerably.

In these days when Cansu Dere received an individual achievement award in Spain and got together with her fans, it was also a good development that the ratings of the TV series Sadakatsiz have increased.

Sadakatsiz took second place in all categories, but in the EU group, came very close to Kuruluş Osman and showed that he was a candidate for first place again.

In the coming weeks, the race for the first place in the EU group between these two series will be tougher.

Although Üç Kuruş did not achieve as much success in the ratings as his previous older brother Çukur, he managed to win the hearts of the audience.

The most striking character of the series is undoubtedly Kartal, played by Uraz Kaygılaroğlu. Kartal, a gypsy man, is a casino owner who has been crushed throughout his life due to his ethnic identity. Although he may seem violent, he actually has a good heart.

Nesrin Cavadzade plays Bahar, the daughter of a mafia boss. When Bahar’s path crosses with Kartal, who hates her father and wants to take revenge on him, she also finds a way to take revenge on her father. Bahar, who is the daughter of a wealthy family, also realizes her revenge by marrying Kartal, which is a gypsy.

The idea of marriage to Bahar comes from Kartal. Kartal offers to marry Bahar to take revenge on her father. But on one condition: on the condition that Bahar does not touch his hand. After all, Kartal says that he is a man of love and that he does not want the hand of the woman he does not love to be touched.

This condition of Kartal made the audience laugh and the audience shared their reaction to this scene with comments on social media. Bahar and Kartal are already one of the most loved couples in the TV series world.

Many wrote that Hande looks great with a baby, it's time to give birth to a child and there is absolutely no need to postpone motherhood "for later".

Recall that when the actress parted with Murat Dalkylych, the Turkish media wrote that the breakup occurred due to the unwillingness of Erçel to make a family. (Note that Erchel herself did not confirm this information).

Neither Hande nor her boyfriend, actor Kerem Bursin, responded to the call of subscribers to give birth. Also  Kerem said last week that the wedding is still very far.

Gossip columnists suggested that fans' dream of seeing Kerem and Hande surrounded by children is likely to remain a dream. At least in the coming years.

Recall that in Russia and other countries Er.el became known for her role in the TV series "Knock on my Door", which, with poor ratings in Turkey, was able to conquer half the world.

The latest pictures of Eugen were vigorously discussed not only by fans, but also by critics. In the photo, the actress appeared in the image of a charming sorceress, dedicating a photo shoot to the Halloween holiday.

The wrangling in the network did its job and Fahriye's pictures soared up in the number of comments and repostings. - There is a lot of information in the press that you are constantly changing the nanny. This is true?

-I took care of Karan until I started working. We were looking for a nanny when I started filming, it’s true, but the numbers in the articles are wrong ”(the press talked about 15 nannies who did not suit Fahriye)

-What do you pay attention to when choosing a nanny? What are the criteria?

- It is important that she communicates with the child with love. The rest has already been taken care of. Therefore, we are waiting for someone with whom the child will be comfortable. It is also important that the nanny speaks Turkish well. We don't need a foreign language yet. Karan will learn when he gets older. It's important for him to learn his own language, ”said Evcen.

Engin Altan Düzyatan: "I'm at the beginning of my new period" Interview https://rusturkey.com/engin-altan-duzyatan-i-m-at-the-beginning-of-my-new-period-interview https://rusturkey.com/engin-altan-duzyatan-i-m-at-the-beginning-of-my-new-period-interview -You are handsome, successful, famous ...  Do you proud of yourself?

-I think it is not necessary to have the qualities listed by you to lose your way or be proud of yourself.  I don't think a person who comes from a solid family  will pay so much attention on fame.

-You rarely give interviews. Why ?

- I think it is enough to give intervews when it is necessary for work.

-You are now 42 years old.  What has changed in your life after 30?

- I've always worked in a good job, with good actors, with good directors, with good producers, with good teams. After 30 I became more conscious, the roles that came with my age changed.

-What unnerving you most of all?

- People who disrespect themselves, nature and animals. And people who judge everything without looking into the essence of the issue. I prefer to stay away from such people.

- Is it difficult to be one of the most handsome men in Turkey?

-First of all, thank you so much for this compliment. To be honest, I didn't feel any particular problems.

-Why did you choose the Barbaroslar project?

-I like to watch historical works or real-life stories. One of the main reasons I chose Barbaroslar is that it is a very large project. This is an old work that has been carefully prepared for a long time and has a very large production. It also reflects the history section, which I really enjoy reading.- What stage do you think you are at in your career right now?

-I can say that I am at the beginning of a new period? Period  of maturity.

Selma Ergeç’s new interview: "I use second&hand clothes" https://rusturkey.com/selma-ergec-s-new-interview-i-use-second-hand-clothes https://rusturkey.com/selma-ergec-s-new-interview-i-use-second-hand-clothes Explaining that she left the medical school to act, Selma Ergeç said that she remained as a doctor in medicine. Selma Ergeç expressed her feelings as follows: “Medicine was a profession I chose very willingly, but then life’s coincidences brought me here. While acting from time to time, I always thought that I would return to medical school and advance in this field. When I said I will be acting for a while, my grandfather said: ‘Acting is a profession without bread’. She means you’re hungry.

Of course, it’s a profession with no guarantees, so it was met with some trepidation by my family as well. In the final, we came to this day after a corner, by a lot of coincidences. I love my job very much, but not having continued in the medical field is also in my heart.”

The actress, who took a break from the sets for a while after she got married and had a child, answered the question of whether she had difficulties in shooting that took hours: “We are trying to establish an order now. Everyone is trying to put the industry in order together.

Now I see that there are some rules brought by sectoralization and the obligation to comply with them. We are only at the beginning of the road, of course, I believe it will be much better. As long as these become clearer, I think life gets easier and as a result, the quality of the work increases.”

The actress, who also made candid statements about her outfit choices to the magazine, said that she prefers to wear comfortable clothes in her daily life. Selma Ergeç said, “I don’t like to wear tight clothes, I get bored. I like to dress comfortably. I use second-hand clothes that are comfortable and wear out even if this is not a problem. I don’t serve the clothes, so let it serve me. I’m in favor of comfort, ”she said.
